VCDC endorses the “green building” philosophy incorporating resource efficiency and sound building science in the construction of affordable properties. Southface Energy Institute, the founder of EarthCraft House, selected VCDC as the point of contact throughout the state of Virginia to lead its green building program for multi-family and single-family projects. EarthCraft Virginia serves as a blueprint for healthy, comfortable homes that reduce utility bills and protect the environment.
Twenty projects throughout Virginia have already committed to the EarthCraft Virginia standards with twenty additional projects expected to join in the coming year. The Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) has encouraged green building in its Qualified Allocation Plan that governs the allocation of federal housing tax credits. Project sponsors can improve their chances of funding by committing to meet the EarthCraft multi-family building standards and obtain the related certification. VCDC provides training and technical assistance for project sponsors, participating architects and buildings.
